Lebawit Lily Girma is currently the Global Tourism Reporter for Skift. She is an award-winning Ethiopian-American travel journalist, author and photographer. She writes about heritage, sustainable travel and tourism as a vehicle for social impact, among other topics. Her work has been published in BBC, CNN, Travel + Leisure, Sierra, Delta Sky, Lonely Planet, AFAR, MorningCalm (Korean Air) and Every Day With Rachael Ray, among others.
Girma is a former corporate attorney who ditched her Washington DC office for the road in 2009 to pursue travel journalism.
Born in Addis Ababa and educated in Côte d’Ivoire, the UK and the US, she is fluent in four languages – including Amharic, French and Spanish – and her cross-cultural journey shapes every aspect of her life.
Her career has included a focus on the Caribbean region, as well as content marketing, editorial leadership and copywriting for travel brands and tourism boards.
She was featured in Forbes in 2020 as one of 15 Black Travel Writers To Read Now, and she’s been interviewed and quoted in numerous outlets, such as Oprah Magazine and Travel Pulse, as well as on podcasts and radio shows.
In her spare time, she volunteers as Senior Strategist as part of Impact Travel Alliance’s global team, and runs SeetheCaribbean.org – the first-ever traveler resource showcasing sustainable travel to the Caribbean.
Lily holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia Law School and is the recipient of the 2016 Marcia Vickery Wallace Memorial Award for Excellence in Travel Journalism from the Caribbean Tourism Organization.
